Manipal: A self-defense workshop, Naari Suraksha, was organised for women by Kasturba Medical College (KMC) as a part of Volunteer Services Organisation’s (VSO) Daan Utsav celebrations at the TMA Pai Hall.
The trainer for the event was Suraj Shetty from Falcon Fitness, who taught the Muay Thai technique of combat to those who participated in the event. “Women are the farthest from fragile and are mentally stronger. It’s better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener who has to go to war,” he elucidated.
Motivated by instances of violence against women around the country, Ishita, a volunteer of VSO and a student of SOAHS, highlighted how she felt workshops providing self-defence training, would inspire women in the future. “You can’t afford to be a damsel in distress in this day and age. Preparedness is the key,” opined Neha, a fourth year student at the Manipal College Of Dental Sciences (MCODS).
The chief guest for the event was Dr. Poornima Baliga, Dean of KMC, who gave anecdotes from her past experience as a former hostel warden and stressed on the importance of learning self-defence, especially, for women.
