MANIPAL: The Manipal Centre for Humanities (MCH) hosted a four day film studies workshop tackling the archiving and interpretation of Indian cinema at the Gangubai Hangal Auditorium from February 13 to February 16.
The workshop featured four public talks by experts on the subject and the screening of the film, ‘From Gulf To Gulf To Gulf’. The speakers were: Prof Ashish Rajadhyaksha, a film historian, author and art curator; Dr. Ratheesh Radhakrishnan, associate professor at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Bombay; Shaina Anand from CAMP, a collaborative film studio in Mumbai and Dr. Rashmi Sawhney, Associate Professor at Christ University who has published multiple articles on film studies.
Throughout the workshop, the history of cinema, the importance of film archiving, the translation of images, and the “cinema effect” were explored in great detail. The workshop aimed to change the way participants looked at film studies, reimagining both the subject and cinema itself.
The workshop attracted film enthusiasts hailing from various backgrounds, some pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering, some in the arts, and some doctoral students. The participants found the workshop educational and the talks free-structured and interactive.
